Small brick and mortar retail stores require a good, yet modestly priced, collection of software to meet their inventory, sales and marketing needs. Of course, small retails can be managed the old–fashioned way with hand written receipts, physical inventory counts and hand printed flyers – but why?
For less than $2000, a retailer can streamline and speed up all processes.
You can purchase a POS system with software and hardware from popular suppliers like Dell, The General Store or POS–X. These packages come with PCs, software, scanners, thermal receipt printers, cash drawers, card readers and software. POS Software handles everything from inventory management to credit card transactions. But if you already have a computer, you can cut costs by just purchasing Quickbooks: Point of Sale software and the hardware for about $1500 directly from Intuit.
Most small retails, who do not sell to other vendors, can get by with a simple barcode program. If you want to design your own labels and only want to work with a few codes, programs like B–Coder or UPC Tools will satisfy your needs. They are simple to use and copy into other programs easily. If you want one program that generates barcodes and creates labels, software like IDAutomation and My Tattoo ID are a good fit. These programs include a variety of barcode fonts and have a label creator in the same program.
Nearly all retailers make use of flyers, coupons, business cards, brochures and other printed marketing materials. Programs like Art Explosion Publisher Pro, PagePlus and Print Shop Pro Publisher can create printable items with company logos and images easily. These programs can also be used to create newsletters, stationary, CD labels, simple web pages, greeting cards and much more.
Keeping the books is easier with a good accounting program like Peachtree, MYOB or Quickbooks. These programs can manage everything from accounts receivable to payroll to invoicing. If you purchase the Quickbooks POS software the Quickbooks accounting program is 100% compatible.
